In 73 AD this fortress was the last stand of the Jewish rebels who were fighting the great Romans.
This is how in my head it could have looked like before the Romans attacked, with a lot of tents because the inside was almost flat.
The Jewish revolt started around 65 AD. It lasted 8 years. This fortress was the rebels best chance of winning the fight. At least so they thought.
The Romans fighting them were the x fretensis legion, which before served under the control of Julius Cesar.
